The 16 Days of Activism for no Violence Against Women and Children is an International awareness-raising campaign. It takes place every year from 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to 10 December (International Human Rights Day).

South Africa adopted the campaign in 1998 as one of the intervention strategies toward creating a society free of violence. The campaign continues to raise awareness among South Africans about the negative impact of violence against women and children on all members of the community.

This year’s 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign was launched on Tuesday, 24 December 2020. The theme for this year is “Women Economic Justice for a Non-Violence and Non-Sexist South Africa.”

For this year (2020) The Hope of Survivors—SA took part for the first time in the 16-day global campaign. The Hope of Survivors issued a statement on 25 November 2020 that says, “The Hope of Survivors is an organization which totally stands against Gender-Based Violence, Street Harassment, Sexual Violence, Sexual Harassment, and Racism. All are acts committed by a person who, in fact, has no self-respect. Respect yourself by respecting others.”

The organization, through its Facebook page and other social media platforms, has been posting statements that are against Gender-Based Violence and issuing statements that are in support of the victims of Gender-Based Violence.

The President of The Hope of Survivors—SA, Pastor Siyabonga Magadlela, had an interview with Mhlobo Wenene Radio FM on 2 December 2020, where he was interviewed and he gave a background of The Hope of Survivors—SA, that it was formed in 2019 and officially registered as an NGO in July 2020, allocated in Brits North West Province and is taking part for the first time in the awareness.

While the President welcomes and acknowledges the 16 Days of Activism, his remaining concern is that South Africa is still home to high levels of violence against its women and children, despite a world-renowned Constitution and legislative overhaul that safeguards the rights of women and children. He stressed that, while The Hope of Survivors—SA appreciates all intervention, he believes that prevention remains the key element in turning the tide against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide.

He said The Hope of the Survivors—SA will use all its resources to eradicate the abuse and killing of women and children. In his conclusion he urged all South Africans to take actions to support the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign, and that The Hope of Survivors will be visible in all social media platforms to raise awareness against Gender-Based Violence. United we stand; divided we fall.
